At the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Awards Ceremony & Concert on January 10, 2012, the National Endowment for the Arts not only welcomed five new inductees into this elite group, but also celebrated 30 years of jazz and its importance in American culture.

For the first time, the National Endowment for the Arts critically acclaimed Operation Homecoming writing program will take place in a clinical setting as part of a formal medical protocol to help heal service members at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
The National Endowment for the Arts is leading a new task force of 13 federal agencies and departments to encourage more and better research on how the arts help people reach their full potential at all stages of life.
At a public panel discussion in Rapid City, South Dakota, today, National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman announced that the agency will award 863 grants to organizations and individual writers across the country.
The Poetry & Prose Pavilion is one of more than a dozen pavilions where 100+ writers and illustrators will discuss their work. New pavilions featuring “Cutting Edge” literature and State Poets Laureate have been added alongside pavilions on history and biography, mystery fiction, graphic novels, and more. Last year a record-breaking 150,000 book fans attended the festival.
“On behalf of the National Endowment for the Arts, it is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Irish traditional musician and 2010 NEA National Heritage Fellow Mike Rafferty,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “Rafferty has devoted a lifetime to exploring, performing, and teaching traditional Irish music to students on both sides of the Atlantic.”
