CHINESE PAPER ARTIST EXHIBITIONS

“Bloom: Cut Paper by Bovey Lee” was on display from 13 to 16 January at the International Finance Centre in Shanghai. Presented by Hugo Boss, the exhibition contained a dozen of the artist’s recent works, showcasing her stunning mastery of a traditional art form.

Lee’s pieces are hand-cut with an X-Acto knife out of single sheets of Xuan paper; the paper is a medium that has been used in China for over a millennium. Her work is a playful and contemporary take on a traditional craft technique, and she incorporates classical and modern imagery to highlight the dramatic transformation that Chinese society has undergone in the last few decades.

…these works tend to be influenced by the urbanisation happening in China which is truly astonishing, especially the dramatic changes I witnessed in Beijing in 2010 after my first visit there in 1989. China’s urbanisation fits with the themes of power, sacrifice, and survival that I explore in all of my works.

While Lee is anticipating her third solo exhibition in Hong Kong in May, this was her first show on the mainland. The exhibition was part of a two-part project, for which she also created window installations at selected Hugo Boss locations around China. The window installations were on display from 5 to 31 January 2012.

Bovey Lee is a Hong Kong-born artist currently based in Pittsburgh, USA. She began studying traditional Chinese arts at young age, and became interested in painting and digital production before beginning her exploration into cut paper in the 2000s. She has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, among others. She is represented by Grotto Fine Art in Hong Kong and the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco.
