The Brisbane turntablists and hip hop community are organizing a fundraiser for The Masta (The Master / Da Masta / Jason Belzer) who is also suffering from cancer. Initially they are asking for people to donate items for the eBay auctions – details below. I remember seeing The Master DJ at gigs and in competitions (eg DMC & ITF) in Brisbane in the 1990s and early 2000s. He always had the flair to entertain the audience with crowd pleasing moves. At the time there was a fair bit of rivalry between some of the turntablists – there were battles between DJ Angus / Bribe and The Master. Angus was a friend of mine so I always went for him of course, but I thought The Master was a good turntablist too – his skills often had the crowds cheering. I remember seeing them battle it out on the decks at Rics in the Valley and at the bar in Paddington (which I’ve just forgotten the name of, will update when I remember).

A new gallery recently opened its doors in Sydney last month and tonight is their official launch party. MiCK Gallery launches its inaugural exhibition with a group show of represented artists including Julia deVille, Nicholas Blowers, Amelia Disspain, Geoff Dyer, Marise Maas, Jessica Tremp, and Michael McWilliams.
The new gallery, which occupies the historic space of 44 Gurner Street, Paddington, is now in its fifth iteration as an exhibition space. It’s been home to galleries since 1976 and is continuing to house contemporary art under director and dealer Megan Dick.
The new gallery will represent both emerging and mid-career artists across a variety of media and practices with a full schedule of solo exhibitions, commencing with Jessica Tremp in November this year.

Both Melbourne and Sydney are seeing major efforts to assist the community art centre at Warmun (Turkey Creek) in the East Kimberley recover from devastating floods that it suffered earlier this year – as reported on this site on 4th May – THE GOOD AND THE BAD IN THE KIMBERLEY
Water not only knocked over many homes in the community but attacked the art centre and its on-site archive of historical works by artists such as the late Hector Jandany, Queenie McKenzie and Rover Thomas. Many of the 730 missing canvases were subsequently recovered, but require massive conservation effort to restore to anything like full health. Tne Federal government, Toll Holdings and Melbourne University have all chucked in – but more is needed!
In fact the fund-raising dinner at Melbourne University on Friday 21st October is being held in conjunction with a visit to Melbourne by Warmun elders who will be examining the conservation processes being overseen by expert Prof Robyn Sloggett.
In Sydney, a charity auction is being held under the auspices of the Aboriginal Benefits Foundation. It’s at the Stills Gallery in Paddington on Sunday 13th November, from 2-4pm. The event will include entertainment by dancers from NAISDA the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association. Warmun artists such as Roberta Daylight, Rammey Ramsey and Eileen Juli have donated works to the auction – Daylight’s being an image of the flood itself.
Personally, I don’t mind a little rain when I’m riding – I’ve become quite adept at riding with a brolly and the centre of gravity on an upright Velorbis helps no end. But heavy rain does tend to put people off so our much anticipated Art Month ride last Saturday was somewhat small but nevertheless perfectly formed…..
We seemed to narrowly avoid storms all day and rode from Flinders St Gallery up to Charles Hewitt on South Dowling Street and down to First Draft on Chalmers Street with barely a rain drop falling on us.
Photographer Daniel Shipp, who has worked with ARTIST PROFILE on shoots for Alexander Seton (Issue 11) and Deborah Kelly (Issue 12) has just launched a new project – The Fasion Week Project. In May this year, Shipp spent 5 days behind the scenes of the 15th Rosemount Australian Fashion Week photographing the faces we don’t normally see – the backstage staff and crew.
Shipp is driven by his own idea of beauty. An immensely talented portrait photographer, his photographs are driven by the overwhelming desire to capture character. His deep fascination with light and the cinematic aesthetic produces bold and captivating images. This latest project further engages the concepts and fascinations that underlie his practice and present the faceless personalities of the fashion world, as Shipp explains in his artist statement:
“I am as interested in the wallflower as I am the show stopper. I have my own idea of beauty.
“Fashion Week brings to mind a string of images. With this project I wanted to look beyond those images just a little and study the people who work behind the scenes at an event like Fashion Week.
“In May 2010, during the five days of the 15th Rosemount Australian Fashion Week I worked with an assistant to hunt down and photograph around one hundred of the people working at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney. Utilising a 3×2 metre space that was overflowing with people and equipment, I photographed the faces you are looking at which belong to people such as stage hands, show producers, cleaners, hair and makeup artists, volunteers and management.”
A selection of prints from the project are currently installed and on exhibition in the window of Belinda, William Street, Paddington as part of the Sydney Fashion Festival Satellite Program, until 28 August, 2010.
Closes on 03 May 2010
