Taipei Arts Awards 2011 win for mechanical installation artist Han-chih Liu

TAIWAN CONTEMPORARY ART AWARD

A focus on machines and narrative drive has bagged Taiwanese artist Han-chih Liu (劉瀚之) the Grand Prize in the coveted Taipei Arts Awards for 2011. Administered by Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), a Grand Prize winner and five Honourable Mentions were selected from just over 250 entries.

The artist describes his winning works, a series of three mechanical installations entitled Collar Seizing Device (揪領器), Page Turning Machine (翻書機) and Walking/Reading/Messaging Leaving Machine (步行閱讀留言機) respectively, as such,

In theatrical terms, it is like making a prop first, and then developing the plot, characters and setting. These machines are not aids in everyday life. Instead, they are used to develop a context, a vocabulary and relationships, or as quasi-props to suggest something. Through their use by man (characters), a short story evolves.

According to Taiwanese English-language newspaper, The China Post,

The ‘Collar Seizing Device’ is literally a device one can wear to seize someone’s collar when a person feels threatened. The ‘Page Turning Machine’ can turn imaginary pages like those of a book, whereas the ‘Walking/Reading/Message Leaving Machine’ allows you to read handwritten massages fixed on your scooter’s pedal.

Liu is an emerging artist with a number of local group exhibitions under his belt. In 2011, he held his first major solo, called “Liu Han’s Night”, at Nan-Hai Gallery in Taipei. For his Taipei Arts Awards win, the artist receives TWD550,000 in prize money and the opportunity to show his work at TFAM sometime within the next two years.

Han-chih Liu’s winning works will be on display in an awards exhibition at TFAM, along with that of other finalists, until 4 March 2012.

Creative Writing Contests

Are writing contests a good way to build up a writing profile that you can offer to a publisher. My own opinion is ‘yes,’ but it is a qualified ‘yes.’ Let me explain.

While there are undoubtedly many writing contests out there and this site hopes to bring these to your attention there are none-the-less a great deal of scam contests or at the very least questionable contests that you have to be careful with.

There are people and companies out there who prey on the novice writer desperate to get published. So eager to be published that they are willing to dig deep into their cash reserves and pay outrageous fees to enter contests that ‘guarantee’ that you will be published in an upcoming book, or even win the hundreds of pounds promised for just a little outlay! The advice is simple: if something sounds to good to be true it generally is.

It is a sad fact of life that many of these so called contests never really pay out any prize money and indeed the contest seems to go on and on and on.

So should you forget writing contests? Absolutely not. There are hundreds of legitimate contests run each year, some will offer big money prizes, others no more than pocket money but they are legitimate. Here are the tell tale signs of a legitimate writing contest.

It is an annual contest and can produce a list of previous winners.

The organizers name the judges up front and they normally look for published authors, editors and or agents. However, it is not essential that there is a big name involved but they have to show some sort of credentials. The key is that they are named up-front.

Following from that is a contact name, address and in these days an e-mail address of one of the organizers who you can contact for additional information. Like a request for a list of previous winners.

Scam contests often have no closure date or do not say when winners will be announced.

Contests with large entry fees should really be avoided. Look for contests that have entry fees of around £10, but use a little common sense if the entry fee is a little more. Keep an eye out for ‘no fee’ contests, they are becoming more and more popular. It is not unusual for some established writing contests that will charge a fee in excess of £10 but in return they will offer you a critique of your work – whether you win or not. In many cases this can be a good investment. Again think carefully.

How much are you been charged to enter the contest and what is the potential payback. Would you spend £5 on he hope of winning £50 – I wouldn’t. The prize money has to have some relationship to the entry fee.

If you pick your contest carefully you will increase you chance of winning. Why enter a contest about bringing up dogs if you don’t like animals? Or football if you hate the game? Concentrate on what you know and what interests you.

Carefully consider the value of the prizes. Are you willing to try to write 1,500 words about a topic you’re not familiar with – in order to have a chance at winning a $20 gift certificate or perhaps publication in some unknown journal?

Winning a contest sponsored by a reputable publication (like Writer’s Digest for example…) can certainly provide the break you needed to become a respected published writer.

Carefully weigh the cost(s) – both monetary and creatively – to you with the potential results – whether winning money or recognition.

And last, but not least, try to make entering writing contests something that you do for fun – not perceived fame or instant riches! Hopefully both will come your way

First art prize

Ceduna artist Beaver Lennon has won his first major art prize – at just 22 years of age.
Beaver has been awarded the Adelaide Festival Centre’s South Australian Indigenous Acquisitive Art Award.

The win was announced last week at the official opening of the ‘Our Mob 2010’ exhibition in Adelaide.

Lennon was presented with $5000 in prize money for his painting entitled ‘The Break of Dawn’.

A talented young artist, Lennon started painting at the Ceduna Arts and Cultural Centre in February 2005.

He comes from a family of artists – his mother, uncles, grand-mother and grand-father were all keen artists.

He has exhibited in every ‘Our Mob’ exhibition at the Adelaide Festival Centre from 2006 to 2010, as well as at Tandanya in Adelaide and the Red Poles Gallery in McLaren Vale.

Lennon’s works explore his own country – that of the Mirning people of the Far West – using incredible realism and detail to depict particular aspects of that landscape, such as specific landforms, species of flora and fauna, light, terrain and distance.

Lennon has worked on major public projects around the state, including murals, and has also been exploring the genre of portraiture.
